Why should you service your vehicle?

Posted on: 06/12/2013

You need to service your vehicle to keep it healthy. Simples. And with winter further enveloping us, you need your car to be in tip-top condition.

Here at Recycle Motors, we want you to get the most out of your car before you recycle it. That's why we believe it's crucial for vehicles to be regularly serviced. But there can be confusion among drivers about how often this needs to be done, what it entails and what you can do yourself.

Let's take a look at what you need to know to stay ahead with your vehicle's service:

How often should you get your car serviced?

Under no circumstances should you view an MOT test as an alternative to servicing your vehicle. An MOT is only a basic safety check.

A full service is recommended every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever happens first.

And if you're tempted not to bother with your service, think about this: A properly-maintained car is not only more fuel-efficient, but will be safer and more reliable as faults will come to light at an earlier stage and are less likely to result in a breakdown.

So, the only person who will lose in the long-run if you don't service your vehicle regularly, is you.

It's important to note that vehicles with a full service history attract more buyers and higher prices. In fact, for certain models, a full manufacturer service history could add between £1,000 and £1,500 to its value.

What happens in a service?

It's impossible to provide a blanket description for what a service fully entails, as it's a different process for each make and model of car.

Enter your car's trusty handbook. Take a leaf through and find out what you need to know.

There are some actions that should take place regardless of what make or model your car is though, such as lubrication of all working parts, an oil change, new spark plugs and safety checks.

Always ensure you are taking your car to a reputable garage, check online for testimonials and ask friends/family if they could recommend anyone.

Can I do anything myself?

You can, check your tyre pressures, engine oil and coolant level weekly. This could save you some cash in potential repairs and you don't have to get dirty or need expert knowledge to do them.

Obviously, if you feel unsure of anything, take your vehicle to your reliable mechanic.

However if your car is beyond a service, then why not scrap it with us? That way you can bank some extra cash for a brand new vehicle - see what your vehicle could be worth at Recycle Motors Ltd.

Outstanding read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little investigation on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
